The COVID-19 virus, as we are aware, has accelerated changes in the way we learn. The global pandemic that has affected the entire world and halted many industries has posed new challenges in education. If we look back just a few years, we’ll recall the circumstances of that time. Curfews, the suspension of in-person schooling, and limitations on gatherings even in small groups. However, it quickly became evident that acquiring knowledge is one of the most fundamental human needs, and a way was promptly found to continue it.<\/p>\n

The development of digital technology has greatly assisted distance learning and proved to be vital for both younger and adult learners. The crisis-ridden pandemic year finally brought something positive. There is an increasing number of adult education courses conducted exclusively through various online platforms. Tutorials for mastering specific skills are highly sought after. It’s difficult to find someone who hasn’t solved problems with a \u201chow to\u201d<\/a> video.<\/p>\n

The advantages and disadvantages of online education today can be seen in the following text.<\/p>\n

Advantages of Distance Learning<\/h2>\n

There are numerous advantages of distance learning, and we will mention just a few of them.<\/p>\n

Flexibility in Online Learning<\/h3>\n

One of the greatest advantages of online learning is flexibility. Traditional education often comes with its limitations, but online learning allows students to attend classes using their smart devices and applications like Zoom, Meet, and Skype. This means that students can learn whenever it suits their schedules best. Saving the time spent on commuting to the classroom, especially in large cities, has proven to be a key benefit of organizing online classes. This flexibility has also led to a significant reduction in absenteeism and more frequent class attendance.<\/p>\n

Learning in a Comfortable and Familiar Environment<\/h3>\n

Many students experience some form of anxiety when entering educational institutions. Working in a comfortable and familiar environment positively affects mood, and consequently, the quality of work.<\/p>\n

\u0423Learning a Language Remotely<\/h3>\n

Learning a foreign language yields the best results when the instructor is a native speaker of that language. In other words, you’ll learn Serbian best from a teacher whose native language is Serbian. Logically, you can find such instructors in Serbia. Online education allows you to easily coordinate class schedules with the teacher and master the material from wherever you are at that moment. Convenient, isn’t it?<\/p>\n

Learning from the Best<\/h3>\n

In traditional classroom teaching, you are limited to the available teaching staff and curriculum at that time. Distance learning offers you a broader selection and the opportunity to work with the expert staff and curriculum that best suits your needs. The popularity of available courses from the world’s most prestigious universities, (such as Harvard<\/a>) for example, is explained by this very fact – if you’re already investing time in mastering a subject, you want to learn from the best.<\/p>\n

Program Accessibility<\/h3>\n

Do you remember school classes where the teacher wrote on the board so quickly that by the time you copied half the content, the board was already wiped clean, and something entirely new was beginning? No one can blame you for giving up halfway through the class, copying, and learning. We’ve all experienced this countless number of times.<\/p>\n

This is not the case with online learning. Content is mostly prepared in presentations, classes are recorded for review and reuse, and materials are easily shared and available for use. Some studies even show that online learning is up to 60% faster than traditional education, thanks to access to rich and interactive materials. And this is a permanent advantage.<\/p>\n

Individualized Approach<\/h3>\n

The flexibility of online learning allows for adaptability in class schedules according to individual educational needs and the abilities of each student. The use of modern technology enables teachers to monitor the progress of each individual student and provide customized materials that match their level of prior knowledge and learning pace.<\/p>\n

Parental Control<\/h3>\n

How many times have you wished, as a parent, that you could attend your child’s class and see how things are done? Online education allows you to do just that. Although we don’t recommend using this option excessively and thereby compromising the independence of the students, you can occasionally “attend” a class and gain insight into the quality of the instruction.<\/p>\n

Drawbacks of Online Education<\/h2>\n

With so many advantages and ease of implementation, it’s hard to think that online learning has any drawbacks. However, it does. Technology, no matter how advanced, can never replace the classroom atmosphere and the sense of connection that develops among those who are together in the educational process. If this sounds too abstract, we will also mention a few specific drawbacks in the organization of online education.<\/p>\n

Flexibility of Online Learning \/ Age of Participants<\/h3>\n

Easy organization of classes, regardless of location and time, has been listed as the primary advantage of distance learning. These same characteristics can also be its significant drawback. Without vigilant supervision by the teaching staff, learning becomes solely reliant on internal motivation. As we know, for motivation to be strong, it requires either seriousness (years) or student maturity. This leads us to the data that distance learning is highly successful for adults, while the results are mixed for children. If a child is disciplined and motivated, online learning will not differ significantly from in-person learning. However, if a child requires more substantial supervision and enjoys face-to-face interaction with the teacher, it’s better to attend classes in person.<\/p>\n

It also depends on the field of study

Online education has proven to be extremely practical for language learning. This is primarily due to the nature of conversational components, which can be carried out seamlessly through various available platforms. However, for some fields, it’s a real challenge. This is the case with mathematics, for instance, and mathematics teachers are quite cautious when recommending online learning.<\/p>\n

In mathematics, the methods of acquiring knowledge are somewhat different. As we all assume, presentations cannot play a significant role. In mathematics, the process of working is as important as the result, so it’s essential to ensure that students progress step by step alongside the teacher. Such attention is only partially possible, and only complete control can yield good results.<\/p>\n
